Our pain, God’s glory
John 9:1-12
Sunday, 10/30/22

1.  Our pain isn’t necessarily the result of something we did v.1-3
2.  Our pain is an opening for the work of God to be displayed v.3
3.  Our pain is an avenue for us to mature and exercise our faith v.4-5
4.  Our pain doesn’t dictate the method of how God works v.6-7 
5.  Our pain is an opportunity for us to bring glory to God v.8-12

Saying No to Jesus
John 8:48-59

The longer I say no to Jesus the harder it is for me…
1.  To accept who Jesus is and what he has to say v.48
2.  To receive what Jesus has to offer v.49-51
3.  To want to understand what Jesus taught v.52-53
4.  To obey what Jesus says to do v.54-55
5.  To believe what Jesus came to do v.56-57
6.  To surrender to the lordship of Jesus v.58-59

1.  Believe our lineage and not Jesus v.39-40
2.  Live for self rather than honor God v.41-44
1 Corinthians 2:14, “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” 
James 2:14, “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?”
James 2:17, “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
James 2:26, “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.”
3.  Reject God’s word when sin is confronted v.43
4.  Cling to his lies and not God’s truth v.44-46
5.  Have a false sense of righteousness v.47

The Benchmark and the Benefit
John 8:31-38

1.  The benchmark: To continue and remain steadfast in loving obedience to God’s word v.31
2 John 9, “Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
2.  The benefit: What I come to know from abiding in God’s word
1.  I will know absolute truth v.32
2.  I know I am free v.32-34
Ephesians 2:1-3, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath.”

4.  I know my heavenly father v. 37-38

In Jesus we Trust
John 8:21-30

1.  Trust Jesus for the forgiveness of sin v.21-24
2.  Trust Jesus because hell is a reality v.21-23
3.  Trust Jesus before it’s to late v.21
2 Corinthians 6:1-2, “As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”
4.  Trust Jesus because of the important truth’s he says v.25-28
5.  Trust Jesus because he’s always with you v.29
6.  Trust Jesus have you v.30

The Light of Christ
John 8:12-19
Sunday, 9/25/22

1.  The light of Christ shines and overcomes the darkness of the world v.12
2.  The light of Christ shines upon everyone but must be accepted v.12
2 Corinthians 4:4-6, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.  For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord.   For God made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”
3.  The light of Christ shines through the truth of his word v.13-18
4.  The light of Christ shines so I can have a close relationship with God v.19

 
* Jesus exposes the true motivations of the heart. (v1-7)
* The Pharisees publicly tested Jesus. 

      * The law was given to reveal sin and we must be condemned by the law before we can be cleansed by God’s grace…There must be conviction before there can be conversion.
         * The Bible Exposition commentary: NT V1 p320
            *    * Jesus publicly exposed the Pharisees
      * Jer 17:13- those who turn away from you shall be written in the earth
      * Ex 23:1- Do not be a malicious witness
* Jesus also loves and forgives the broken hearted. (v10-11)
   * Matthew 5:17' “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. '

How to protect yourself from walking away…
1.  You cannot remain a casual follower 
2.  You have to stay teachable and submit to the truth of God’s word 
3.  You have to trust and surrender to God’s sovereignty
4.  You have to maintain an active and growing faith
