God’s Action…

Hebrews 12:22-24, “But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,  to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,  to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant.”
3.  The procurement
Isaiah 49:15, “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?  Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.  Behold, I have engraved your name on the palms of my hands.”

The Casual Crowd
John 6:22-35

Ecclesiastes 12:9-11, “Not only was the Preacher wise, but also he imparted knowledge to the people.  Weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care.  The Preacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.  The words of the wise are like goads and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings: they are given by one Shepherd.”
1.  The crowd seeks Jesus for what he can give them v.25-26
2.  The crowd satisfies their physical appetite more than their spiritual need v.27
3.  The crowd supposes they can contribute to their salvation v.28-29
4.  The crowd selfishly wants Jesus to prove himself v.30-35

Matthew 14:24, “The boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.”
Mark 6:48, “They were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them.”
1.  When in the storm trust in Jesus’ direction v.16-17
Matthew 14:22, “Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.”
Mark 6:45, “Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.”
2.  When in the storm trust in Jesus’ intercession v.15
Matthew 14:23, “And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.”
Romans 8:34, “Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”

Matthew 14:25, “And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

Matthew 14:28-30, “And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”  He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Power of Perspective – Numbers 13:25-33

 

The Christian life is not about achieving, it’s about receiving

 

When we lose perpective: 

#1 We get stressed out by conflicting information

 

#2 We develop a scarcity mentality

 

#3 We fulfill our own self-defeating prophecies

 

#4 We infect others with our negativity 

 

#5 We project our own insecurities onto others

 

2 Chronicles 20:29 – “And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.”

 

In order to keep proper perspective:

Magnify the Lord!

 

Isaiah 66:1-2 “Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declare the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.”

 

Psalm 34 “I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord, let the humble hear and be glad, O Magnify the Lord with me let us exalt his name together!”

Facing Overwhelming Odds
John 6:1-14

When facing overwhelming odds…
1.  Know that there is a tension between my faith and Jesus’ sovereignty v.1-6
2.  Know that you need only a little faith to get Jesus’ attention v. 7-10 
Hebrews 11:6, “It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.”

3.  Know that you need to continue to be thankful v.10–11
4.  Know that Jesus can work a miracle in overwhelming situations v.11-12
5.  Know that Jesus works differently in every situation v.13
6.  Know that everything Jesus does is to change our perspective v.14

What keeps people from Jesus…
1.  Desiring to do what I want v.30
2.  Growing tired of hearing people witness v.31-35
3.  Not accepting the valid work of Jesus v.36
4.  Being religious which is worthless v.37-40
Galatians 1:13-14, “For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.  I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.”
Philippians 3:4, “If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more:  circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.”
Philippians 3:7, “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.  For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ  and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ.”

3.  Jesus claimed to be able to exhume the dead v.28-29
1 Thessalonians 4:15-17, “For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.  For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”
4.  Jesus claimed to be the one who will execute judgment v.22,26-27

Spiritually Disabled pt.3
John 5:9-17

1.  Being disabled just isn’t physical but it can also be spiritual 
2.  Jesus offers us an opportunity to admit we need spiritual healing
3.  Hearing and responding to what Jesus says brings spiritual healing
4.  Eliminating legalistic man-made regulations brings spiritual healing
5.  Having a healthy view of sin brings spiritual healing
Having a healthy view means…
1.  Knowing sin has earthly and eternal consequences
Psalm 119:67, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.”

Put both of these verses on the same slide if you can
Galatians 6:7-8, “Do not be deceived, God cannot be mocked.  A man reaps what he sows.  Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction.”
Proverbs 14:14, “The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways.”
2.  Knowing not everything bad that happens to me is because of sin
John 9:1-3, “As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.  His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”
3.  Knowing Jesus comes to me despite my sin but desires for me not to sin

Spiritually Disabled pt.2

Galatians 3:1-3, “You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.  I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard?  Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?”
Galatians 4:8-10, “Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.  But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?  You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!  I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.”

How to know what to do:
1.  Ask if it’s a biblical mandate, if it is, obey what it says.
2.  Ask if it’s biblical counsel, if it is, then it’s wise to do what it says
3.  Ask if it’s a man-made regulation, if it is, you are free to ignore it.
Colossians 2:16, “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.”
