The Casual Crowd
John 6:22-35

Ecclesiastes 12:9-11, “Not only was the Preacher wise, but also he imparted knowledge to the people. Weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care. The Preacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true. The words of the wise are like goads and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings: they are given by one Shepherd.”
1. The crowd seeks Jesus for what he can give them v.25-26
2. The crowd satisfies their physical appetite more than their spiritual need v.27
3. The crowd supposes they can contribute to their salvation v.28-29

Mark 6:48, “They were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them.”

Matthew 14:22, “Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.”
Mark 6:45, “Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.”
2. When in the storm trust in Jesus’ intercession v.15
Matthew 14:23, “And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.”

Power of Perspective – Numbers 13:25-33
The Christian life is not about achieving, it’s about receiving
When we lose perpective:
#1 We get stressed out by conflicting information
#2 We develop a scarcity mentality
#3 We fulfill our own self-defeating prophecies
#4 We infect others with our negativity
#5 We project our own insecurities onto others
2 Chronicles 20:29 – “And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.”
In order to keep proper perspective:
Magnify the Lord!
Isaiah 66:1-2 “Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declare the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.”
Psalm 34 “I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord, let the humble hear and be glad, O Magnify the Lord with me let us exalt his name together!”

Facing Overwhelming Odds

When facing overwhelming odds…
1. Know that there is a tension between my faith and Jesus’ sovereignty v.1-6
2. Know that you need only a little faith to get Jesus’ attention v. 7-10
Hebrews 11:6, “It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.”

4. Know that Jesus can work a miracle in overwhelming situations v.11-12

What keeps people from Jesus…

Galatians 1:13-14, “For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.”
Philippians 3:4, “If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.”
