1. The benchmark: To continue and remain steadfast in loving obedience to God’s word v.31
2 John 9, “Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
2. The benefit: What I come to know from abiding in God’s word
1. I will know absolute truth v.32
2. I know I am free v.32-34
Ephesians 2:1-3, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath.”

2 Corinthians 4:4-6, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord. For God made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”
